My Bankruptcy is Over, Now What?
Once you receive your discharge, you will be completely relieved of personal responsibility for any of the debts that were included in your petition. There is a tremendous amount of freedom that comes with the feeling of being debt free but there is also a tremendous amount of responsibility.
You have taken a very important first step by filing for bankruptcy and doing what was necessary to get your financial affairs back in order. Now that you have gotten back on the right path, it is critical that you continue to take appropriate action to improve your credit rating and start rebuilding a solid credit history.
What You Can Do Now
The first thing you should do is order a copy of your credit report to see that all of the debts that were discharged in your bankruptcy are marked "bankruptcy status" or zero balance. If they are not, contact the credit reporting agency to correct any inaccuracies. If you run into problems, refer the matter to your attorney to file a dispute. Every year, you should order a copy of your credit report and review it for accuracy.
As you begin to apply for new credit after bankruptcy, use it wisely. Respect it. Establishing credit and making payments on time is one of the best ways to improve your credit score. At the Fairfield, Ohio law office of R. Dean Snyder, Attorney at Law, I have been a lawyer for over 20 years. I have seen firsthand the positive difference debt relief can make in a person's life and I have seen what can go wrong when people fail to avoid the old mistakes. Make the most of your fresh start.
